Former DGP Tamil Nadu Sentenced 3 years jail for IPS officer sexual harassment
Rajesh Das, a former Special Director General of Police in Tamil Nadu, was convicted and sentenced Friday to three years in prison for sexually harassing a female Superintendent of Police.
The incident occurred in February 2021, when the two officers were assigned to the then-Chief Minister’s security detail during an election campaign.
M Pushparani, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Villupuram, convicted Das guilty of sexual harassment. He was also convicted under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act, 2002, and sentenced to three years in prison concurrently. The court ordered a Rs 10,000 fine for each infraction.
D Kannan, the then-Chengalpattu SP, was also found guilty of participating in the incident by the CJM. Kannan was charged with impeding the female officer’s attempt to file a complaint against Das. Kannan was fined Rs 500 by the court.
Das “committed the crime,” according to the CJM court, despite being “one of the most senior officers in the State.” As a result, it decided to “impose the maximum level of punishment.”
The incident happened on the night of February 21, 2021 on the Trichy-Chennai route, according to the CB-CID. Das was returning to Chennai after performing “VIP duty for the then-CM during an election campaign.”
He allegedly invited the female IPS officer to accompany him in his car. Despite the late hour, the female officer in charge of welcoming Das obliged, believing he had a cause for the request.
The lady cop was spotted hurrying out of the car when the excursion ended roughly 40 minutes later, according to the CB-CID. This was the location where senior officers awaited Das to take over from the female officer who had accompanied him.
Senior police officers observed her run out of Das’s car for a short distance – her own car was far behind. She requested the car of another senior officer who was waiting there. The officers on the scene were suspicious, but they were unaware of the nature of the incident. According to the investigation, the female officer did not speak with them at the time.
Das continued his journey to Chennai, making phone calls to the female officer but going unanswered. The next day, Das allegedly sought the assistance of a senior IPS officer in order to contact the female officer. The senior officer couldn’t immediately reach her because she had already left for Chennai to submit a complaint with the then-DGP.
When Das learned that the female officer was on her way to Chennai, he allegedly directed officers in the Villupuram area to intercept her vehicle. A team of officers stood guard at a toll plaza, but her automobile had already passed through.
Following that, Kannan, the then-Chengalpattu SP who was fined Rs 500 by the court on Friday, received orders to intercept her automobile before it reached the Chennai city region.
It was said that around 150 individuals were involved in the arrest of the female cop. According to reports, they even took the key to her car and asked that she return to her neighbourhood.

Kannan, on the other hand, chose to allow her journey continue after she was claimed to have told him that she would hold him accountable in her complaint.
