MoE launches SWAYAM Plus platform to promote employment-oriented programs

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, MoE, launched the SWAYAM Plus portal. Through partnerships with key industry players, the site will provide programs that are employability- and professional development-focused.

According to Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, MoE, the platform will include 43 million more working professionals and higher education students, expanding the reach of the classroom.

“Futuristic courses like semiconductors, artificial intelligence, etc. are needed for the industry and for the youth of the country,” he continued.

According to him, “a step in that direction is applied education with SWAYAM Plus, employability, entrepreneurship, job-centric training, and hands-on training.”

Launched by the Union Ministry of Education in 2017, SWAYAM is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform that offers educational opportunities to a large number of learners. By the end of 2023, 72 lakh students had enrolled.

As per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, courses that meet industry needs and improve learners’ employability will now be available on the SWAYAM Plus platform.

SWAYAM Plus, which was created in partnership with major corporations like Microsoft, Cisco, L&T, and others, has cutting-edge features including credit recognition, multilingual content, AI-enabled assistance, and career routes.

The SWAYAM Plus platform primarily focuses on achieving the following:

  • Establishing an ecosystem that benefits all parties involved in professional and career development, such as academic institutions, industry, learners, course providers, and strategic partners,.
  • Enabling a system that grants credit recognition for excellent courses and certifications provided by the top academic and industry partners.
  • Reaching a large learner base by providing employment-focused courses, based on learner needs across selected disciplines, with options to learn through resources in vernacular languages. Reaching learners from tier 2 and 3 towns and rural areas is a priority.
  • In due course, SWAYAM Plus also plans to provide value-added services like job placement, scholarships, and mentorship access. This will create a digital ecosystem that will enable learners to pursue upskilling and reskilling at all levels, including certificate, diploma, and degree programs.

According to Shri Pradhan, MoE, it is critical that courses be provided in local languages to empower every student and realize the goal of Viksit Bharat, where creativity knows no language.

In order to support young people’s holistic development, the platform ought to cover courses like music, painting, creative arts, humanities, and liberal arts in addition to STEM instruction.
