Narayana Murthy recommends Three-shift work instead of one

Narayana Murthy recommends three-shift work instead of one, not in all but in infrastructure, to speed up development.

The founder of Infosys, NR Narayana Murthy, stated that the government must prioritize completing infrastructure projects and stressed the need for three working shifts, not just one. He made the remark while talking about how Bengaluru, his hometown, has to improve over the next five to ten years.

On November 29, during the Bengaluru Tech Summit, Narayana Murthy was having a fireside talk with Nikhil Kamath, the co-founder of Zerodha. He stated, “Completing the Electronics City Metro and expanding to other areas, where there are a lot of companies located, must be prioritized.”

He urged the infrastructure sector to go beyond the conventional one-shift. “They should not work just one shift; come at 11 a.m. and go at 5 p.m.,” he stated.

Narayana Murthy, said that in the nation, those with high goals typically work two shifts. He said that India can outpace China’s growth if it adopts a similar strategy. “People who have strong goals work in other parts of the country. Since I will return at midnight, I have witnessed two shifts. Additionally, I’ve witnessed individuals laboring as though they might vanish tomorrow morning. Thus, although I am unable to personally attest to three shifts there, I can attest to two,” stated Murthy.

“Now, if we want to be better than all those countries, why don’t we say our people will work three shifts? Ask them what the requirements are for them to complete their work by working three shifts, and provide them with that. I think there is a little bit of this that can be done by our leaders. And if we did that, then I have no doubt why India cannot grow even faster than China, not just in growth alone. Our base is only 2.5 trillion, whereas China’s is 19 trillion. But we will catch up with China, and hopefully one day we can overtake China. But that requires making quick decisions and ensuring that all hurdles for entrepreneurs like you and others today—I’m not an entrepreneur—are removed as if there is no tomorrow,” he added.

Narayana Murthy, had already started a social media controversy with the statement, “Youngsters should work 70 hours a week if India wants to compete with economies that have made tremendous progress in the last two to three decades.”
