Samsung Electronics Seeks Government’s Intervention for Workers’ Safety Amid Ongoing Tensions
Samsung Electronics has asked the Tamil Nadu government to ensure the safety of its workers amid ongoing tensions at its plant. The company expressed frustration over a section of workers attempting to disrupt operations, saying: "At Samsung, our priority is to maintain a safe and stable workplace for all workers." Protests have escalated following the suspension of three CITU-backed union officials, leading to a one-day strike call across Kancheepuram district. CITU state president A Soundararajan accused Samsung of violating the Factories Act by employing temporary workers not on the muster rolls, prompting the protests that lasted for five hours before police intervened.

CHENNAI: Amid growing tensions at the Samsung Electronics plant in Tamil Nadu, the Korean electronics giant has called upon the Tamil Nadu government to ensure the safety and security of its workers. The request comes against the backdrop of escalating protests by a section of the workforce, which has disrupted operations at the plant.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Samsung expressed its frustration with the ongoing disruptions: “A certain section of workers once again illegally tried to disrupt operations and industrial peace today. While our production remains uninterrupted, we urge the state authorities to secure the safety of our workers, maintain discipline, and provide ease of doing business.”
The tension at the plant has been fueled by the suspension of three officials from the CITU-backed Samsung India Workers Union. Following the suspensions, CITU state president A Soundararajan accused Samsung of violating the Factories Act by employing temporary workers not on the muster rolls, which prompted protests.
On Wednesday, CITU called for a one-day strike across all industrial units in Kancheepuram district. The following day, employees affiliated with the CITU union allegedly attempted to halt production at the Samsung plant, leading to a standoff that lasted for around five hours before police intervened and removed the protesters from the facility.
“As a company, our priority is to maintain a safe and stable workplace for all workers. We have a zero-tolerance policy for any illegal activities by workers that disrupt industrial stability and peace at the workplace,” Samsung stated.
The ongoing labor trouble has put the spotlight on the state labor department, with accusations that it has not taken action against Samsung’s alleged unlawful activities. The situation remains tense, and Samsung’s plea for government intervention underscores the urgent need to resolve the conflict and restore normalcy at the plant.
