After five-day work from office mandate, TCS issued sudden transfer notices

TCS, the Indian worldwide leader in IT services, consulting, and business solution providers, is now issuing unexpected transfer notifications to its employees in the midst of work from the office and new hiring deferring mandates.

According to IT employee union Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has given transfer letters to over 2,000 employees across locations, requesting them to join the designated site within 15 days. This comes just a month after TCS mandated that workers work from the office five days a week.

Employees were given around two weeks’ notice to relocate to their allotted places, according to the media post. Employees may be reimbursed for travel and lodging expenses based on the corporate policies in effect. Employees began receiving these emails in late August.

Failure to comply will result in the employees facing “initiation of disciplinary actions.”

At least 180 employees have filed complaints with NITES, stating that TCS is pushing them to relocate “without proper notice or consultation, causing immense hardship for them and their families.” TCS has now been officially charged by the IT union with unethical transfer procedures by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

“The company is ignoring all the financial hardship, family disruption, stress, and anxiety that these forced transfers cause to employees,” stated Harpreet Singh Saluja, President of NITES. TCS is subjecting its employees to unnecessary hardship and infringing on their rights. We have encouraged the Ministry of Labour and Employment to conduct an investigation into TCS’s behavior and to take appropriate measures to protect IT workers from such unethical practices.

Some TCS executives who requested anonymity stated that this is a typical migration done on a case-by-case basis, since the company frequently requests that required personnel relocate to specific regions based on the projects allocated.

“This is especially applicable for the freshmen who may have been trained at different locations but are now getting deployed on actual projects,” the chief of staff said.

According to Saluja, while some employees have accepted and have already moved to the allotted areas, approximately 150–200 colleagues are still apprehensive and are discussing their concerns with firm HR personnel. However, after their two-week deadline passed with no more notification, their email account was canceled for failing to transfer.

“These employees were no longer able to communicate with HR via email.” HRs then instructed them to report to their allocated sites immediately or risk losing their wages and employment,” he explained.

“In fact, the employees who shifted to the Mumbai location on ‘urgent business’ nearly a month ago are still on the bench,” Saluja remarked. They have not yet been allocated a job.”

Five days of work from office mandate

This comes more than a month after TCS sent out letters requesting that some teams work from the office at least five days per week beginning October 1, 2023.

While the hybrid work transition policy of expecting three days of work from the office will remain the norm at TCS, sources say managers in various divisions have been urging employees to come in five times a week. However, the corporation will maintain flexibility and hybrid policies and will make exceptions where appropriate.
