New Delhi, May 13, 2024 – The ongoing strike at Air India Express has been called off following the reinstatement of 25 terminated cabin crew members. The decision was made after a meeting between the airline’s management and the protesting crew, convened by the Chief Labour Commissioner.
Earlier last week, the airline terminated the services of 25 senior crew members who had reported sick, leading to flight cancellations since Tuesday night. The sudden mass sick leave taken by the cabin crew had put the Tata Group-owned airline in a difficult position, forcing it to cancel more than 170 flights.
In a statement, the Chief Labour Commissioner said, “After detailed discussions, deliberation, and persuasion, the representative of the union has agreed that all the cabin crew members who have reported sick will report for duty with a fitness certificate immediately.”
The management agreed to reinstate the 25 cabin crew members who were terminated on May 7 and 8, 2024, for reporting sick as a concerted action. The cases of these cabin crew members will be reviewed as per service regulations.
The representatives of the management assured that all the issues raised by the cabin crew before the management and during conciliation proceedings will be looked into and resolved.
Following the agreement, more than 200 cabin crew members who had started reporting sick from Tuesday night to protest against alleged mismanagement at the airline have agreed to return to work.
Air India Express has apologized to its passengers for the inconvenience caused by the “unintended disruptions”. A spokesperson of the airline said, “We are pleased with the progress we made at the conciliation meeting and welcome our cabin crew colleagues back at work.
This will help us swiftly restore our flight schedule and fulfill our commitments to our guests. We sincerely apologize to those inconvenienced by these unintended disruptions. It is not in keeping with our usual service standards, and we will review it internally to ensure accountability.”
