Air India, the ex-govt enterprises, which was acquired by the Tata sons last January, has undergone significant changes as part of a five-year transformation plan. In the first six months of the plan, the airline hired 3,800 people in various roles and implemented over 29 new policies.
The Tata Group has invested USD 200 million in information technology systems and plans to invest an additional USD 400 million in aircraft refurbishment. In addition, they have placed an order for 470 new planes.
The transformation strategy is split into two phases. The first phase, Vihaan.Al, aims to address legacy issues while also laying the groundwork for future growth. Take Off, the second phase, will concentrate on developing platforms, processes, and systems to achieve excellence.
According to Air India CEO Campbell Wilson, the airline has made significant progress in the first six months of its transformation plan. Air India is expected to return to the forefront of global aviation thanks to investments in aircraft, information technology, and staff recruitment.
AirAsia India and Air India Express will merge during the second phase of the plan. Once regulatory approval is obtained, Vistara will merge with Air India. In addition, the airline will establish a world-class training academy and restructure its line and base maintenance.
Air India has introduced new premium economy seats, as well as redesigned its international and domestic menus. Furthermore, the airline has implemented over 29 new policies to improve employee well-being. It has also accelerated fleet expansion and achieved revenue and load factor records.
Air India has established extensive spares and support agreements to improve global reliability, and it is working with Boeing to improve the dependability of the 787 planes.
Almost all first and business-class seats have had their in-flight entertainment systems repaired, and economy seats are nearly 90% complete. Air India has also reactivated over ten code-share agreements and is in active talks with other airlines.
