IITen and IIMen are not Passionate Professional: Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath
The India’s largest stock brokering company, Zerodha, established in 2010 by an Engineering Graduate, Nithin Kamath. Nithin is Co-founder and CEO of Zerodha Securities Private Limited. The Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath recently revealed that the IITen and IIMen are not Passionate Professional, so Zerodha never hired them.
However, behind this statement, Nithin has its own beliefs and unconventional wisdom that makes Zerodha an interesting case study.

Not hiring from IIT’s and IIM’s, the company has its own beliefs that such institutes don’t produce professionals that are much focused on quickly developing their careers instead of thinking-long term perspective to help business. As a company, Zerodha always prefer passion to education degrees in their top teams.
In a podcast conversation, Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath said, “We’ve never hired a single person from IIT and IIM till now because we’ve found it very tough to fit such people within the organization,”
“The graduates from these institutions are more focused on developing their careers instead of thinking about the growth of the company”, Nithin confirms.
Nithin added in the conversation, “At least for the core team, the people who do important stuff at Zerodha, we see if they’re passionate about the cause. Education doesn’t matter.” Zerodha prefer passion to education.
Nithin Kamath further added, “The thing about IITs and IIMs is that when you’re in that kind of environment, you’re wired to think about how quickly you can grow in life. This culturally doesn’t fit well (at Zerodha) because we can’t tell people how quickly they can grow.”
To sustain this phoneme of passion over education, Nithin said, “Zerodha have its own criteria”. “If you’re okay getting up every day, doing something different, and looking to keep getting better as a business — if you’re okay with taking that chance, we can hire you,” he confirmed.
