According to the nationwide survey on workforce perspectives on the appropriate working hours per week in India, 84% of respondents are opposed to working 70 hours per week. The poll had 8.95 lakh replies.
Only 17% of respondents believe that working 70 hours a week is a viable option for young professionals. When asked what their main concern would be if they had to work 70 hours a week, 47% of respondents named the toll on mental/physical health, followed by 45% stating family/personal life imbalance and 8% saying it would make them hate their job.
This survey was conducted by Inshorts, an India’s highest-rated and #1 English news aggregator, to evaluate people’s perspectives on the best preferred working hours per week for professionals in India, amid the current discussion on optimal working hours for maximum productivity. With over 8.95 lakh responses, the poll also elicited information about the present working hours of professionals in India, as well as their perspectives on how a 70-hour work week will affect productivity.
70-hour work week model:
When asked if a 70-hour work week would increase productivity, 84% of respondents said no. Only 17% of respondents believe that working 70 hours a week is a viable option for young professionals. When asked what their top concern would be if they had to work 70 hours a week, 47% of respondents cited the toll on mental and physical health, followed by 45% mentioning family or personal life imbalance and 8% saying it would make them hate their work.
The Optimal versus real work hours:
46% of respondents believe that working up to 40 hours per week is optimal. However, just 25% of those polled actually work 40 hours every week. 36% of respondents work at least 41–50 hours per week, and 23% work at least 51–60 hours per week. A stunning 42% of respondents work on weekends and designated work holidays at least twice a month, with 32% working every weekend.
Work-life balance:
When asked if they thought organizations encouraged work-life balance, 61% said no. Furthermore, 56% of respondents feel obligated to react to work-related emails and texts after hours or on weekends.
