SHANGHAI, CHINA :  – Shuntian Chemical Group, a Chinese firm based in Shandong province, has made headlines with its highly controversial policy mandating that all single and divorced employees get married by September or face termination of employment. The policy, implemented in January, was met with widespread criticism for discriminating against single employees and being excessively invasive.

Public protests erupted and the government quickly intervened, leading the local human resources and social security bureau to investigate the matter. Within a day, the company withdrew the policy, according to reports by the South China Morning Post.

The policy required employees aged 28 to 58 to marry and settle down. Those who remained single by March were instructed to submit a letter of self-criticism, while those who failed to marry by June were subjected to an official assessment. Employees who did not meet the September deadline were told they would be fired.

Shuntian Chemical Group claimed the policy aligned with Chinese values and traditions, justifying it as a response to the Chinese government’s call to improve the country’s marriage rate. The firm argued that the policy provided employees with an opportunity to prove their loyalty to their country and fulfil the expectations of their parents and colleagues. However, the company was reminded that Chinese labour law prohibits firms from questioning the marital status of job seekers or applicants.

The swift withdrawal of this bizarre policy serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting employees’ personal lives and adhering to labour laws that protect their rights.  For further insights into the evolving workplace paradigm, visit
