Over 34% of managers have to guess their priorities at work. A Digital Work Trends Report

The secret to corporate success and reaching personal objectives at work is work scheduling and prioritization. However, scheduling and prioritizing decisions are made based on management abilities and guidelines. Still, a Digital Work Trends Report found that more than 34% of managers have to make educated guesses about their objectives.

There is a discrepancy between the kind of work that managers require and what workers require to be effective, according to the Infragistics 2023 Digital Work Trends Report on Slingshot, a data-driven work management platform. While many businesses use frequent check-ins to monitor workers’ progress and encourage productivity, workers believe that having defined deadlines (30%) and clear priorities (42%) will increase productivity more.

The paper examines the relationship between management and employee productivity as well as how many of the things that employees look to their leaders for—such as deadlines, priorities, and the volume of work they are accountable for—have an impact on employees’ performance and productivity. It also exposes a generational gap in the leadership and job navigation styles of employees.

“Employees often feel overloaded, unsure of priorities and deadlines, and afraid to say no to additional work, even when they have too much on their plates already,” says Dean Guida, founder of Slingshot. “And leaders are left scrambling when employees haven’t been focusing on the highest-value task or miss deadlines after taking on too much. This is all caused by a lack of visibility and alignment across teams.”

The key findings are below:

Because they are misinformed and overworked, employees are losing half of their workday.  When workers have too many jobs and projects on their plate (37%), lack focus on their priorities (25%), and lack deadlines (17%), they report that these factors have the greatest detrimental effects on their productivity. The majority of workers (64%) claim that not having deadlines causes them to lose at least one or two productive hours every day, with 22% claiming that they lose three or four hours. Having too many tasks to manage comes in second, with 62% of workers reporting they lose one or two productive hours per day and 20% claiming they lose three or more.

Increased meetings do not equate to increased output. A majority of leaders (69%) and managers (52%) believe that they must closely monitor staff members when they fail to meet deadlines or produce subpar work. However, when their supervisor follows up with them too frequently (45%) or calls needless status meetings (43%), workers feel micromanaged. Actually, according to 25% of workers, work meetings are the most annoying disruptions they experience during the day.

The methods used by different generations and genders to establish priorities at work vary: When given no priorities, nearly half (49%) of millennial workers make educated guesses about what matters most, whereas 33% of baby boomers and 35% of Gen Z workers make the final decision. The majority of Gen Z employees (55%) claim to discuss priorities with their coworkers. The methods used by men and women also vary: 43% of women say they discuss priorities with their coworkers, while 45% of men claim they make their own decisions.

“Where employees spend their time is where their priorities lie, but this often doesn’t line up with their leaders and the larger goals of the company,” Guida adds. “After teams have agreed upon goals and objectives, workers know what their priorities are and what is expected of them, and supervisors can relax knowing that the right tasks are being completed on time. This is the key to achieving corporate objectives.”
