Discriminatory hiring practices cost $25 million to Apple Inc
The settlement followed a lengthy investigation by the Department of Justice.
Apple Inc, the American multinational technology and world’s largest IT firm, lost $25 million USD in a settlement deal for Discriminatory employment practices.
The investigations, which began in 2019, discovered that Apple used hiring procedures that discriminated against US candidates for jobs that were offered to select immigrant candidates seeking permanent residency in the US.
In several circumstances, the investigation indicated that Apple discriminated against non-US residents as well.
However, when it came to hiring methods, the computer major denied doing anything unethical or illegal. According to the settlement filings, it employs over 90,000 people in the United States and remains one of the country’s leading employment generators.
The company argued that it had unintentionally violated the Department of Justice’s standard and was therefore willing to settle for $25 million.
The majority of this money would be put into a fund to help victims of discrimination. The remaining sum will be the penalties imposed on Apple for engaging in discriminatory hiring practices during the 2018-19 fiscal year. The methods were said to be in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Apple recently lost a plea to stop a $2 billion class-action lawsuit alleging that it concealed defective batteries in millions of iPhones. Apple, of course, denied the charges and attempted to have the case dismissed. The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) has, however, ruled that the case can proceed.
