The majority of Indian employees believe offices are not ready for the new way of working, according to the CISCO study

A recent study found that most employees feel offices are not prepared for the new way of working, despite the fact that most Indians are willing to go back to work at least a few times a week.

The study, which examined employee and employer attitudes towards the current workspaces, indicates that workspace design, layout, and technology have not kept pace with changing employee expectations.

The worldwide networking behemoth Cisco reports that a full or partial return to the office has been ordered by almost 96% of Indian enterprises, with leadership pressure, team collaboration, and productivity being the main motivators.

The mandate for employees to return to the office was well received by 76 percent (the majority) of them, and 82 percent of them said they would like to do so at least a few times a week.

Sandeep Mehra, Managing Director Collaboration Sales, Cisco APJC, said, “Our research shows that employees across the region have embraced hybrid work and are willing to return to the office more often, but with a caveat: workspaces must adapt to their evolving needs and expectations.”

In November 2023, 1,650 employers and 9,200 full-time employees were questioned for the study. Seven Asia-Pacific markets—Australia, Hong Kong, India, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and South Korea—are represented among the respondents.

According to the report, the primary motivations for employees to return to the office are to interact (80 percent), brainstorm and share ideas with colleagues (53 percent), and create a sense of community (58 percent).

Furthermore, the survey revealed that 64% of workers in India believe that office designs and seating configurations hinder teamwork and creative thinking.

Even if working together is becoming more and more important, 85% (the majority) of companies questioned said they still set aside at least half of their workplaces for private workspaces.

Individual workstations (40 percent), large meeting rooms (48 percent), and small meeting rooms (58 percent) are noted by employees as either ineffective or just marginally efficient at increasing efficiency in the majority of workplaces.

“While it’s great that employers are implementing collaboration technology for hybrid work, it’s not enough to just provide them the tools. The majority of workers don’t think they’re ready to use them efficiently, “explained Mehra.

Positively, the study showed that companies are moving closer to modernizing their workspaces. Following the pandemic, 80% of employers have already made changes, and 90% intend to do so within the next two years.
