TCS modified its appraisal system, added “Work from Office” component into staff goals
TATA Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT service company, has modified its performance evaluation system for the new evaluation year. In the modified appraisal and evaluation system, TCS includes a component for days when employees work in the office.
To confirming this change and implement the new evaluation process, TCS emailed managers and team leads with instructions to assign a “Return to Office” goal to all the team members.
As per media reports, an Indian multinational IT services and consulting company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has emailed its employees regarding modification into its appraisal system that the employees should work from the office.
As per the email, sent to managers and team leaders, stated the “Return to Office” goal, the employees are expected to work from the office for 3 days from the nearest TCS branch. The company has stated that the appraisals are designed to be a feedback and improvement mechanism for the employees.
N Ganapathy Subramaniam, chief operating officer at TCS, said in an interview given to ‘Business Today’, “TCS has always encouraged its employees to come to the office.” “There is a greater realization that by coming to offices, more things get done, especially for people who have joined us in the last two years.”
“When they come and see the offices, they see a different perspective of TCS, they see a different perspective of their own position as well as their peers”, N Ganapathy Subramaniam added.
The TCS’s modified appraisal system will consist of the following aspects:
- Work Performance
- Collaborative working
- Learning
- Professional Conduct and other relevant areas.
However, the recent initiative by TCS is receiving mixed responses from HR experts. As an earlier internal email shared with employees, the company has asked its employees to work from the office for at least three days a week.
A TCS spokesperson said to media that employees will work according to the roster. The roster will be assigned as per the project requirements, which includes both freshers and experienced professionals. However, there is no deadline for the return-to-office plan, so far.
The company said in its earlier email, “Senior Executives of the company have been working from offices for a while now and our customers are also visiting TCS offices… Your respective managers will now roster you to work from the TCS office for at least 3 days a week”.
“Adherence to roster is mandatory and will be tracked… any noncompliance will be taken seriously, and administrative measures will be applied”, the company email confirmed.
A TCS spokesperson said that now all the employees have been advised to return to their base locations where they were operating before the pandemic. Those employees who have sought and got transfers will operate from the changed locations.
Due to the Covid, the company announced a 25×25×25 work model where it envisaged that by the year 2025, no more than 25% of its employees would need to be at a TCS facility at any given point in time, and no individual would have to spend more than 25% of their time at a TCS facility to be 100% productive.
In the economic slowdown situation, TCS declined its hiring numbers and employee base headcount by 3 % in 2022. However, the company confirms its hiring plan for (FY-24) fiscal year 2023- 24. As company said, they will hire 1.25 lakh to 1.5 lakh in new financial year.
TCS also clarified that none of these headcount reductions are influenced by the demand environment, and were simply a result of mass hiring.
