NITES seeks labour ministry’s intervention on Wipro’s layoff step
The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has taken up the cause of the 450 freshers laid off by Wipro early this year. These freshers were told by Wipro that they would have to leave because they had performed poorly in the post training assessment conducted by the organization despite the training they had received.
The NITES President, Harpreet Singh Saluja, wrote to the minister of state for Labour and Employment to seek the government’s intervention in safeguarding the rights of the laid off employees at Wipro.
The laid-off freshers, received an offer letter early last year when they were informed that they would either have to pay at least 30, 000 rupees for the training or choose to undergo an unpaid internship with a three-month training program. As a result, they were promised that if they completed the program with a score of at least 60%, their salary would be increased to approximately 6.5 lacs per annum.
Despite the fact that the unpaid internship and training ended in July of last year, the onboarding process for these employees was delayed by approximately six months. Now these trainees/fresher’s have been terminated in the manner that NITES calls an illegal manner.
The Senate had condemned this ill manner Wipro’s termination and called it unethical because many of these freshers had rejected other offers to be able to join Wipro.
In the matter of fresher termination, Wipro maintains that the sacked freshers are let go because they were unable to clear the test conducted by Wipro, post training or internship. That test comprises assessment that evaluate whether the individual will be able to align with the goals of the business.
Wipro emailed to the impacted employees reminded them that the offer letter they had received mentioned that the employment could be terminated by the company or the employees after providing the notice for 30 days to the other party.
In the email, Wipro also told to the terminated freshers, the Company is being letting them go without having to pay the training cost.
