Talent retention and productivity are global issues, and companies are making efforts to keep their workforce satisfied and energized to work with the same zeal and motivation every day. What can businesses do better to maintain employee trust in the face of a global economic slowdown and mass layoffs? As a bonus, give employees the equivalent of 50 months’ salary at the end of the year.

A Taipei-based container transportation and shipping company, Evergreen, has announced bonuses worth 50 months’ salary to their employees after an outstanding financial year.

The actual bonus amount for employees will vary depending on the employee’s job grade and function. This bonus is applicable only to staff. The company has added that this is the usual year-end bonus based on the company’s performance for the year.

Evergreen has said that the year-end bonus is decided based on the company’s performance for the year and the employees’ individual performance. The employees will be given an average of 10 to 45 months’ salary as a bonus this year. Evergreen Marine has given a maximum of 52 months of salary as a bonus to the employees who have performed well.

The employees with Taiwan-based contracts will be able to avail themselves of the perks. However, the Shanghai-based employees have complained of unfair treatment.

A report published in Caixin said, “These employees have received a bonus of only five to eight times their monthly wage.” However, shipping companies have warned of rapidly weakening global growth. The company is set to record three times the revenue it recorded in 2020. The total revenue amounts for the most recent one, 2022, have been around USD 20.7 billion.

Since its establishment, September 1st, 1968, by Dr. Yung-Fa Chang, Evergreen Marine has secured its place in shipping history.
