Never given advice without doing it myself: Narayana Murthy defends 70-hour work week

Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, defended his contentious seventy-hour work week recommendation for India’s youth, stating that the nation’s educated populace owed it to the less fortunate to work “extremely hard.”

The 77-year-old software tycoon defended his position by highlighting the labour-intensive efforts of farmers and factory workers in an interview with Shereen Bhan of CNBC-TV18. The problem is that, in this country, we have to work hard because the poor farmer works hard. He stated in the interview that “those of us who got education at a huge discount, thanks to the government subsidy for all this education, owe it to the less fortunate citizens of India to work extremely hard.”

Even though there has been a lot of criticism on social media, Murthy claimed that many of his “western friends” and “NRIs” are pleased with his remarks.

Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty, who was also interviewed by CNBC-TV18, stated that her family typically worked a 70-hour work week, although he (Murthy) used to work up to 90 hours. Murthy stated that he has never offered advice “without doing it myself first,” recalling his days of starting work at Infosys at 6 a.m. and finishing by 9 p.m.

During a podcast interview with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai in October of last year, Murthy stated that India had some of the lowest rates of labour productivity in the world and that India’s youth needed to work longer hours to compete with China and other nations, just as Germany and Japan did after World War 2.

His remarks caused a stir and sparked debate about the value of employee well-being, mental health, and work-life balance.
