In 2022, female labour force participation in India will be 24 percent. This low rate, which jeopardizes the country’s economic development and social welfare, necessitates an urgent review of India’s policies and programs aimed at empowering women.
In contrast to the low rate of female workforce participation, a recent Labour Ministry survey revealed that women’s labour force participation, particularly in the manufacturing sector, is not equal across all states. Over 43% of Indian women working in manufacturing are from a single state.
In India, nearly 15,80,000 women work in industries (manufacturing sector), with 6,79,000, or 43 percent, working in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
This information was revealed in the Indian Labour Ministry’s Annual Survey of Industry (2019-20). In addition, the Southern Indian state ranks second in the percentage of women-owned businesses among all proprietary micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Notably, Tamil Nadu accounts for approximately 6% of the Indian population.
“If you want to progress, don’t incentivize poverty or population; instead, incentivize what percentage of girls get to go to school, stay in school, graduate, get employed, etc.” Tamil Nadu’s Minister for IT and Digital Services, Palanivel Thiagarajan, stated.
He was speaking at the ‘Avtar and Seramount Best of the Best Conference,’ where companies were recognized for their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Best Companies for Women in India, Most Inclusive Companies, and many more were among the categories.
The minister mentioned that maternity leave for those in government jobs has been extended to a full year, among other women-centric initiatives in Tamil Nadu. Other benefits included free bus transportation for women and free breakfast in government-run schools.
He also claimed that self-respect marriages had significantly reduced female infanticide in Tamil Nadu. He went on to say that families with girl children were once burdened by high marriage expenses, which resulted in rampant female infanticide.
However, the implementation of self-respect measures that could be carried out on a small scale and registered with the government resulted in reform. Furthermore, he stated that economic independence has surpassed marriage as a priority for women.
According to the minister, organizations with more diverse workforces outperformed those with less gender-balanced workforces, citing a BlackRock study. Similar studies, he added, revealed how above-average profitability in organizations was linked to gender diversity.
“In 2023, 77 percent of companies reported that having a diverse workforce had a positive impact on their innovation revenue, up from 53 percent in 2021.” This indicator is expected to reach 100 percent by 2025, according to Dr. Saundarya Rajesh, founder and president of Avtar Group.
