New-Age Companies Offers Sleeping on the Job | The New Workplace Perk
If your employer asks you to sleep at work for 30 minutes. How will you feel? When we asked, one of the respondents compared it to ice cream on hot chocolate. Sleeping on the job is becoming a new workplace wellness trend.
Countries like China, Japan, Spain, Italy, Norway, Indonesia, Botswana, and the USA have workplace napping in their customs. Organizations in Eastern countries accept workplace napping, but in the United States, some of the largest employers encouraged employees to sleep on the job.
Now, sleeping on the job is becoming a new-age workplace culture in India. Overwhelmed with work, tired out, and needing a quick shut-eye? Employees at some new-age companies will now be allowed to snooze in the office and take some me-time as part of the workday.
A host of start-ups like Wakefit, NoBroker, Licious, Solv, and Simplilearn are looking to incorporate “quiet time” for employees, safeguarding their mental wellbeing and helping to build a better work-life balance with office nap rooms, breakout zones, and no-meeting hours and days even as burnout and exhaustion hamper productivity levels across India Inc.
The mattress, furniture, and home interiors’ company Wakefit has implemented a “Right to Nap” initiative under which every employee’s calendar has been blocked for 30 minutes, 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm, every day.
Chaitanya Ramalingegowda, co-founder of the Bengaluru-based startup, said, “This policy is aligned with the company’s vision of maximizing comfort.” “There is a nap room in the office for those who want a quick break, and employees also use the time for a walk, some meditation, and recentering themselves in the middle of a busy workday.”
The company’s technology and data science teams have also introduced no-meeting days, which the co-founder wants to introduce across the organization in due course.
Many other companies, too, have demarcated specific hours or days for no meetings to give employees a break.
At B2B ecommerce giant Solv, there is a ‘no meeting’ hour given every day to employees, whether they work from the office or at home.
Amit Basal, CEO, Solv, said, “This policy bring in a sense of responsibility in managers to ensure the well-being of their teams by making this one-hour sacrosanct; encouraging their teams to block calendars to take a break from regular work and the constant accessibility that technology provides.”
The Indian payment platform, Rozerpay, too, have launched no-meeting days to allow employees to plan for their work schedules better.
Simplilearn, an EdTech company, provides employees with quiet time. Commenting on this workplace initiative, Archana Krishna, co-founder and CHRO, Simplilearn, said, “Quiet time helps employees relax, rejuvenate, and recharge themselves, preventing mental exhaustion, and allowing them to resume work with higher productivity levels.”
Licious and Nobroker have incorporated opportunities for breaks within the workplace premises.
Licious, a meat and seafood company that is part of the unicorn club, encouraged employees to take regular breaks and engage in games like pool, table tennis, and carrom.
Commenting on the workplace amenities, Naveen Kumar, Head HR at Licious, said, “There is also a snooze room for times when employees need to catch a power nap or simply lie down for a bit in order to, return to work energized.”
Property tech unicorn, NoBroker is also in the process of going one step ahead and introducing a dedicated longer break zone and creating a space for employees to give themselves ‘me-time’ within the office itself.
